Fatherhood 527
As my brother can attest, reading can be an addiction – I mean, he actually read an encyclopedia when we were kids, just because he had nothing else handy. Kia’s no better. If there are words, she’s going to read them because she seriously can’t help herself. That said, both of them will slip into my bedroom to read ahead in whatever book we’re working on… and they’ll both narc on each other over it. Why? Because sisters, I guess. One of their favourites is the aforementioned Rainbow in the Dark by Adam Withers and Comfort Love (a favourite of mine, too – check them out!), and we just recently finished the Sithrah series by Jason Brubaker, which they very much enjoyed.
I’m wearing my “advice from a squirrel” shirt, Arwyn has a very patriotic Minnie Mouse, and Kia’s shirt features a flip-sequin unicorn. Kia’s also wearing the elastic band necklace that she made.
After many years of training, I have progressed from bookworm, to bookwyrm 8)
If you’d like, I can dig out my Redwall series of books. They are ‘young adult’ and are pretty good, though sometimes characters die (and not just the villains), you’ll have to make the call if the girls are up for that sort of thing. May be a while before I can get them over to you, of course.
Characters sometimes die in the books I read them, so not an issue. I try to avoid stuff with adultish themes or bloodiness – that sort of thing. One book that they love me reading to them is actually about the character coming to terms with the death of her mother, even though the ending is very bittersweet.
The deaths in the Redwall series are usually in battle, but there’s generally no goriness in the descriptions.
The characters are all animals, wielding swords and spears, bows and slings. The heroes tend to be mice, squirrels, otters, moles, hares, badgers and the occasional small bird (like Sparrows), while the villains are creatures like rats, wildcats, weasels, foxes, and sometimes snakes and birds of prey.
Each book is mostly self contained though certain locations/groups show up repeatedly, and they jump around the timeline somewhat between books.
I’ve got like, a dozen of them, but it’s a fairly large series. I recall there was a cartoon series made that covered 3 of the books.
